About pounamu & greenstone

What is pounamu?

Pounamu is the Māori name for the hard green stone found in New Zealand's South Island, known in English as greenstone or New Zealand jade. It is a taonga (treasure) to Māori, carved into tools, weapons and pendants for centuries.

Should pounamu be given as a gift?

A well-known custom says pounamu is best received as a gift rather than bought for yourself, so it carries the love of the giver. Many people still buy their own piece to mark a milestone; what matters is the meaning you give it.

What do the pounamu designs mean?

Each form carries its own meaning: the koru stands for new life and growth, the manaia for guardianship, the toki for strength and courage, the hei tiki for good fortune, the pikorua for lasting bonds between people, and the matau (hook) for prosperity and safe travel over water. Each product page explains its design.

How do I look after my pounamu?

Wear it often: pounamu is said to take on the wearer's warmth. Wipe it with a soft cloth, keep it away from harsh chemicals, and store it where it won't knock against other jewellery. Replace the cord if it becomes worn.
